Copts Need Not Apply

A couple of days ago I read something in an Egyptian newspaper that made me rub my eyes...look around in confusion...and ask my husband "what year is it??"

The newspaper: Al Masry Alyoum (The Egyptian Today)
The news item: Islamic Fayssal Bank Refuses To Allow Copts To Buy Shares

For some reason, I felt life go black and white around me, and I expected to see a band with a Coptic cross on my arm, and the word "Copts" garffitied on my house.

Then I remembered it's 2006
and humanity has supposedly moved on from this kind of hatred and discrimination

Here's an article written in the same newspaper about this very same subject..by Ahmed Al Sawy. In it he condemns the Egyptian government for allowing this absurdity to take place, at a time when sectarian tension is already at a boiling point.

"
"
I do not believe that the Saudi bank could do this in a country which respects the law and the constitution. I don't even believe that Saudi Islamic banks operating within the Kingdom (of Saudi Arabia) can prevent non Muslims from dealing with them. But it seems Fayssal Bank has found in Egypt a weak legislative system and a government lacking interest in protecting her citizens against such blatant violation of their rights, in their own country!

"
"
Islamic Fayssal Bank was established in Egypt in 1977, and was registered as a commercial bank with Al Bank Al Markazy Al Massry (The Egyptian Central Bank), and it (Fayssal Bank) is supposed to be governed by the same regulations as the Central bank. However, Fayssal bank succeeded in enforcing a part of its own regulatons...the part which states refusal of non Muslim shareholders
.

This was also reported by alarabiya.net...but nevermind the actual report, as always the readers comments are more shocking.

The Christians in Egypt have their rights. It's bad enough they aren't paying "jizya" (the Islamic tax forced on the non-Muslim inhabitants of the lands invaded by the Arabs)

This is an Islamic bank...Muslims deal with it to get away from other non Islamic banks. If the shareholders are not Muslim..Muslims won't put their money there and this will harm the bank's interests! Thank you and Assalam alaykom wa rahmatu Allah wa barakato (the Islamic greeting)

and many more that I honestly felt too sick with disgust from their mentality to have to force myself to translate...

Although to be fair there were great comments also from Muslim readers who said this was attrocious and reaffirmed their belief in equal rights for all Egyptians and no discrimination based on faith.

Yet, such fair and tolerant Muslim mentalities seem to be a minority in the midst of the raging hatred and ignorance.

This isn't my Egypt! This can't be my Egypt!

This is not your Egypt and not ours either, though it's now wonder actually,Islam performs discrimination at its finest, let's not forget Saudi Arabia which discriminates against Muslim themselves by not letting them own their own works(shops, clinics, etc.)unless you have a Saudi sponser,so it seems that Saudis are from anthor planet that we don't know about. The same happens now in Egypt which an (Islamic) bank, that we never actually saw such terms anywhere else,But as everything has to be (Islamic)it's better for the christians not to be invloved,We all shall call for boycotting such thins which make differences and augments hatred between the people of the same country,we never heared that anyone was banned from doing anything in the world because of being Muslim,The Arabs of 48 who live in Israel has the same services and rights as the Israelis,So,when we just ponder it a little,Aint the Muslims the worst people for the humanity?Arent they the most disciminative?Aren't they the most hypocritical?Does the world say bad things about Islam or it just speaks for itself?

Welcome to my humble blog :)...
Thanks for your coment.

Personally I have spoken to many Muslims who are not like this at all...but the fear is that they are not being heard in Egypt. One of them said to me that it's difficult for moderate voices to be heard when much financing goes into spreading ideologies of hatred and discrimination.

Where from?

It;s all oil money! They're the root of our evil.

Of course I don't absolve the Egyptian society itself. Because if the soil wasn't ready and willing...seeds of hatred wouldn't sprout.

There is a difficiency in our society that nurtures such blatant violations.

Welcome and thank you so much for your sentiment and sincerity. I heartily pray you are not a dying breed :)

Happy New Year All :)

Bent el neel,I am not generalizing, but i am so called Muslim,i know how they think,i used to live with parents who never said anything bad about Christians or Christianity, but it's totally different in the outside world and i think you already got my point that Saudi Arabia with its horrible Islam is causing all this,Egyptians have to understand that Christianity is a part of Egypt history and it actually integrates into it and Christians are not our rivals they are part of us,our compatriots and our family.
If only parents would teach their children to love instead of hate, the society will grow up as one.

There really aren't many Copts in the government at all...which is atually one of the issue we talk about when we say there is discrimination against Copts in Egypt.

Having said that, the son of Anwar Sadat (former president) is a member of parliament and he was the one who raised this issue for discussion in the parliament and asked for this ridiculous situation to be rectified.

I'm sorry mate, I didn't mean to imply you were generalising :)

I actually agree with you on a lot of things. And you are one of those Muslims that I fear are a dying breed :(

Thank you so much for your wonderful sentiment...and I know that they're not just words for you, and that you mean every word you say.

God bless
